like this guy was supposed [0:17] to be here since season 1 but finally we [0:21] have DJ taffy in the house so DJ Tavi [0:25] tell us a little bit about yourself and [0:27] how you got into music first of all tell [0:28] us what is your real name well first of [0:32] all my name is tafari Mafi okay um aka [0:36] DJ taffi refer to as reading beast and [0:40] and how did you how did you get into [0:43] music well I I've been doing music since [0:46] high [0:47] school I had to get something to occupy [0:50] myself so I could stay out of trouble [0:53] okay you know cuz um I have a little [0:57] anger and everything so the teachers get [0:59] something that would distract me from [1:01] those type of things so I gu I just fall [1:04] into it okay and you've you've been a [1:06] prominent figure on the Dominica music [1:10] scene for for a few years now like you [1:13] all your mixes are very popular if if [1:15] anybody is looking for you know the [1:18] hottest and latest thing coming out of [1:20] domica they have to check [1:23] YouTube but you with all the the [1:26] attention you've been getting and you [1:28] also do your mixes on your YouTube [1:29] YouTube channel what inspires your [1:32] selection and your blend process when it [1:34] comes to your mixes well from from since [1:38] a young age I I've been very interested [1:40] in um music like EDM house music those [1:45] type of things so it's like that that [1:48] that the thing that that makes my my [1:49] bits and I'm so unique because it's [1:51] sound different the elements the the [1:55] tones the SS they all different because [1:57] I have that EDM kind of men mentality [2:00] you know okay and goad goe well if I I I [2:05] believe if I wasn't living here or if I [2:08] live in like places like England or know [2:12] I'll probably be doing Ed music cuz that [2:14] the music I really listen to okay and [2:16] you've collaborated with a lot of [2:18] artists um even and participated in in [2:21] events like the world cre Music Festival [2:25] um you've been traveling a lot how has [2:27] these types of experiences um influence [2:31] your your career and your musical style [2:35] well personally [2:37] the the traveling and being in different [2:40] shows um interacting with different um [2:44] International artists and make me see [2:46] the music on a different level [2:48] understand and the mix of different [2:51] cultures helped me to to recreate [2:55] something that that never been heard [2:57] before you know and so that that that [3:00] gives me a kind of a mindset like I [3:03] don't to just do the the normal Bo [3:06] everybody making I want do do different [3:08] things to to make it sound International [3:12] you know so going out there like places [3:16] like in um K one love that is the [3:20] friendship and they have it in France [3:22] and and I've been on that even like [3:24] three times already MH [3:26] um being in that that type of [3:29] environment in front all of those people [3:32] give give me a different feeling for the [3:34] music know I I I've been interested in [3:37] music along but right now it it giving [3:39] me the feel to just continue okay and [3:42] and in addition to to being you know a [3:45] DJ you you are known for like producing [3:48] tracks um it's it's like these days you [3:51] and little boy are the hotest thing when [3:53] it comes to you know producing and not [3:56] just producing for Dominican artists but [3:58] you also have you know Regional um [4:01] artist on your rhythms how do you [4:04] approach um your production process and [4:07] what influences the type of song that [4:10] you had you have and what when you hear [4:12] a beat how how do you know instantly [4:15] that's a DJ [4:17] Taff well there there are certain there [4:20] are certain um elements in in in my RMS [4:23] that anybody can just pick out that that [4:25] t that make that you know um have [4:28] certain things people hasn't include in [4:31] the in the production as a producer and [4:34] those are the type of things that I like [4:35] to to incorporate with my rhythms mhm [4:39] again because I I want my my stuff to [4:41] sound different from everybody else I [4:43] don't want to be sounding the same as [4:44] this one and that one you know so I I I [4:48] just love the fact that I can put myself [4:52] outside of the box M than to be in the [4:54] same B that everybody trying and join [4:57] you know okay and as a DJ and Pro [4:59] producer from Dom how do you see um your [5:03] role in promoting and the evolution of [5:06] booya music both in Dominica and [5:09] outside well I I think I had a had a big [5:13] part to play in where bu is now um not [5:18] just me but I talking for myself right [5:20] now [5:22] um for the the growth I I see my YouTube [5:26] channel get in a short space of time [5:28] like about a year mhm because when I [5:30] when I just start to blow my YouTube [5:32] channel was like [5:34] about um like 4,000 subscribers or 3,000 [5:37] subscribers right now my my channel is [5:39] Almost 40,000 subscribers right know and [5:42] I think that because most artists has [5:43] come to me to PST a song Bo post a song [5:46] for for me please and but I I I like to [5:50] tell him it's not just about posting the [5:51] song you know you can post the song but [5:55] marketing have a lot to do with it as [5:57] well check so it's like [6:00] my my my my way of of doing things I [6:04] don't know but I my market my marketing [6:06] skill is a different kind of a thing [6:08] you're on another level yeah not not [6:11] normal yeah just not normal and I think [6:15] I I I can say I I was the the the [6:19] backbone of a lot of artists that that [6:21] get to reach out to different islands [6:23] and so you mhm and what what um in all [6:27] the these songs that you've heard use [6:30] which song would you say that you're [6:32] most proud of or which Rhythm are you [6:34] most proud of well the Rhythm I'm most [6:37] proud of is the fun rhm cuz that is the [6:39] Rhythm that that get me to the place [6:42] that I am today and it was a rhythm that [6:44] I never thought that would even go [6:47] anywhere because that wasn't supposed to [6:48] be him in the first place right you know [6:50] it was just a a a situation where I just [6:53] got my mic and so on so I wanted to test [6:55] it out and so I just happened to [6:58] do and then [7:00] just just put a drums on a b just make a [7:03] because I like to I like to make my my [7:07] um my bits and just post a little video [7:09] make you know and it's from time I post [7:12] that that little video it's like [7:14] everybody just go wild on me French [7:16] people calling me people s Martin [7:19] calling me people Ana calling me they [7:20] want to jump on that they want to jump [7:21] on that and I was like that that's not [7:24] even a r right and that happened to be [7:29] one of the biggest R in boy history mhm [7:32] I can say yeah okay so guys we're going [7:35] to switch up things a little bit and [7:37] we're going to go to a segment of the [7:38] show that we call bu rapid fire where I [7:40] going to ask DJ Taffy some quick [7:43] questions and he going to give me some [7:44] quick [7:45] answers so we're going to try and test [7:48] out you know what Taffy's personality is [7:50] like so Taffy what is your alltime [7:52] favorite bu Tru to play on a [7:55] set right now someone else [7:59] I have two I have two uhhuh someone else [8:02] and you that is um from Little Bo that [8:05] is my two favorite Bo song Tell me why I [8:09] the melody and it the Shiva me [8:12] especially tell me about that [8:14] Shiva it you know you know when you when [8:17] when you hear music and it's like it [8:18] does just give you visualization of [8:22] things you maybe pass through or people [8:25] You' been with and that is the type of [8:27] Vibes that those two songs [8:30] okay and if you could collaborate with [8:31] any International artist who would it be [8:34] and [8:35] why well right [8:38] now I I I never really had a thought of [8:41] of um I mean everybody [8:44] call so you should be thinking like [8:47] who's my dream collab who don't call me [8:50] yet but I want them to call me well to [8:52] be honest I never really I never really [8:54] have a set of who I actually want to do [8:57] a with I just just my thing is I I I [9:01] would like to just collaborate with a [9:03] lot of different island people okay you [9:06] know which I already started with like [9:08] nla Blackman um Ricardo D rest in peace [9:13] I I collaborate a a lot of island people [9:16] shik car guad so I just want to just mix [9:20] up the cultures and and not just make a [9:22] beat and make them drop on it but I want [9:24] to incorporate their culture in in my B [9:27] so can you can give it a different a [9:29] different song Can their people can can [9:33] feel the Vibes the same way like they [9:34] feeling their own okay and what is the [9:36] most memorable event you've performed at [9:39] in Dominica and outside um well for [9:43] outside I can say k one of MH um in [9:47] France okay that is the biggest sad I [9:49] ever seen in my entire life that is like [9:53] being here and people all the way up to [9:56] to about um to um buttons oh wow and [10:01] probably even further okay you know that [10:04] that is that is my most memorable event [10:06] ever and most memorable event in [10:09] Dominica [10:11] um Dominica [10:13] mhm [10:16] wow so I I I I do so much events inica [10:20] yeah but which one standing out the [10:23] most there there was one [10:27] event in um in the stud [10:30] on [10:31] trucks and as a matter of fact that when [10:34] I just had to to to f in on on the truck [10:38] Vibe I think that was last Carnival [10:41] Carnival opening I think after part I [10:44] can't remember exactly I I think I think [10:46] it was uh after opening of Carnival in [10:50] the stadium they had a bunch of trucks [10:52] just packed and playing music no it [10:55] wasn't that one it was it was after [10:57] Carnival oh okay was Mal ah okay okay [11:01] okay right and it's like from from I me [11:04] I've been on truck before that but it's [11:07] like the the the environment of the [11:09] people and so and feeling the music and [11:11] it give me a whole different like it [11:13] justes give me a little chill MH because [11:15] it's like from from a person that used [11:17] to be down there listening to the bands [11:20] and up there it like a whole switch over [11:23] you understand yeah um what is one track [11:28] that never failed to move the crowd when [11:30] you're [11:31] performing [11:34] um well for [11:37] me any song that that that that plays [11:40] only funny RM I get especially overes [11:46] any song that plays on the phone him he [11:49] plays this describe your DJ in style in [11:54] freewoods um [11:57] energetic um [12:00] very selective MH as in know exactly [12:04] what to play for people MH and [12:09] um try to find the last [12:12] word hype okay hype [12:16] okay all right so we're moving on sound [12:19] off right now DJ Taffy with the rise of [12:21] digital platforms we we we've talked [12:23] about your YouTube but with the the rise [12:26] of digital platforms like YouTube Tik [12:28] Tok they transformed the music industry [12:31] yes how has that sort of shift impacted [12:35] your approach to your DJ and your music [12:38] production well because these days is [12:40] like the the the social media can either [12:43] make a break you yes it is true um well [12:49] busting out in in into the the whole um [12:53] music thing the Tik Tok and the things [12:55] was already there for me to utilize mhm [12:59] um so it's like I basically just just [13:03] run with it because I mean those those [13:06] are the does marketing strategies the [13:09] social media MH once once you can get [13:11] your stuff on social media you can get [13:12] people looking at it or or listening to [13:14] it on the social media platform then [13:16] then you already have a crow right um so [13:19] you've you've been collaborating like [13:21] you say with a lot of island people and [13:23] a lot of people outside of Dominica um [13:27] how important do you think that these [13:29] collaborations are when it comes to the [13:31] growth of boyo well I going to tell you [13:35] they they are they are very important [13:37] because if you look at it bo boy music [13:42] right now is like everybody want to be a [13:43] part of it now MH [13:45] and I see the way that that we [13:48] collaborate with the artists and so it [13:51] even give the boy a wider reach because [13:53] they have they have their own following [13:55] as Suka job whatever it is they they [13:58] have their own their own set of people [14:03] we have it own set of people so if them [14:04] those two set of people come together [14:06] you going to be a wider range for for [14:08] both M genres okay and how do you [14:12] because a lot of people are on YouTube [14:15] and you know these days people drop in [14:17] tracks like every few days every every [14:21] week every two weeks how do you ensure [14:24] that your mixes and your your tracks [14:27] stand out in a m that is so saturated [14:31] well it it's all about planning you know [14:35] and so you never know when somebody [14:37] going and drop something mhm um unless [14:40] they marketing it and they they putting [14:42] it out there that they going to drop [14:43] something but it all it's all about [14:45] planning I I'm a type of person that has [14:48] has look at my analystics of my um of my [14:52] content on YouTube [14:55] and that is what that does let me know [14:57] when I should drop on a next song okay [15:00] cuz I as watch the growth of the song [15:02] not all songs will will will hit 10,000 [15:05] views in in couple days that songs I [15:08] will that that will be 50,000 views in a [15:10] day according to to the um the song and [15:14] also the marketing strategy [15:17] and [15:19] personally the the the way the way they [15:23] FL to it in right the way FL to in there [15:27] is like huge especially now in this [15:30] season of carnival coming up you going [15:32] and expect a lot of songs coming out one [15:33] way and the other so it's just you that [15:36] have to know how to plan your thing [15:37] properly and Market your stuff okay so [15:41] Taffy I going to play you some of your [15:43] own readings and I want you to tell me [15:46] when you hear that reading the first [15:48] thing that comes to your [15:53] [Music] [15:55] mind that room [16:01] I tell you that that first as soon as I [16:05] I already know that that is the that [16:06] make travel for the first time to [16:08] perform that was in Anga I think in [16:11] 2023 mhm um yeah I travel to play for [16:16] Halloween party me and [16:18] Quan um that R is the reason why I had [16:22] travel to go for my Island okay [16:34] [Music] [16:39] what's the first thing that comes to [16:41] mind well first thing that comes to mind [16:44] is from how far I I I I come with with [16:50] my part Quan M you know because I can [16:53] remember those days as a matter of fact [16:54] that that song started out from more I [16:58] can remember for sure mhm and it was [17:01] just me and K you know and [17:03] and I I like the fact that I know the [17:06] only person that that had that had [17:10] uh a growth mhm you know and I my right [17:15] now Kan is even bigger than me yeah you [17:18] know so I that that is person that come [17:20] to my to my mind is is Quan because we [17:24] come from that Superstars people pop up [17:27] into he he making that big hit song [17:29] Someone Else and we collaborating on on [17:32] living alongside of little okay next [17:37] [Music] [17:41] [Laughter] [17:45] [Music] [17:48] [Laughter] [17:53] one [17:55] anybody okay [18:01] [Music] [18:06] first thing that come to mind that's the [18:09] business [18:12] sh okay and you have a new [18:19] one 11 days ago it was [18:22] [Music] [18:27] posted this thing like comes to mind the [18:29] first thing that comes to my mind when I [18:31] when I hear that is is my Improvement on [18:34] my fingering skills okay um when I when [18:37] I when I just start I mean I could [18:38] always play keyboard play piano but as [18:42] the time pass by my fingering skills get [18:45] a lot better it improved by a lot you [18:48] know and things got a little easier for [18:50] me in terms of flexing of my fing okay [18:54] and and what what is the intention for [18:56] this reading because it says not offer [18:59] for um performances or songs so what is [19:02] the do you have anyone in mind for the 4 [19:05] read well yes and no um the in the in [19:12] the in the weight is right now with the [19:15] keyboards and everything no um we have a [19:19] a situation [19:21] where people let just take anything and [19:24] just decide like yeah they just go and [19:26] make a song with that and it doesn't go [19:28] the right way doing it right right you [19:29] understand so they just take a beat on [19:31] YouTube and just okay I can sing that [19:34] doesn't look that way you have to inform [19:36] the person that produce it B what is [19:39] their terms and conditions
