Barbados, one good stop at a time

By Crandall “Cranberry” Régy

My Barbados trip did not unfold as one neat itinerary. It was a collection of days with very different moods, and that is what I liked about it. A sunset drink on the rooftop at Hotel Indigo was one of those moments when the setting does most of the talking. The vibes were absolutely unmatched. I wanted to sit there and let the evening arrive.

Corey recommended Chez Carizma for breakfast, and I am glad I listened. The customer service was top tier, the food was a full 10 out of 10, and the strawberry matcha was heavenly. A recommendation like that could have gone either way, but I would pass this one along myself without hesitation. Good food matters to me, and so does how you are treated while you eat it.

One day took me out on the El Tigre catamaran, from 10 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon. The bar was stocked, and there were appetizers, cake and a full lunch, with gluten-free catering available too. The boat stopped twice for snorkelling, including turtles and a shipwreck. I stayed aboard. I know some people would call that missing out, but I was perfectly happy taking in the ocean scenery from the deck. It was my kind of day on the water.

The St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway was another highlight. I had so much fun on the train, then explored the Great House and distillery. It gave me a different window into Barbados and a reason to slow down and look around. I also made it to Hackleton’s Cliff. The scenery there was beautiful, but what I remember most is feeling peaceful and content, with enough quiet to think about what comes next for me.

And yes, there was karaoke at Blast Bistro. That might become one of my regular Barbados activities. A trip needs moments where you can just be silly, sing, and enjoy the people around you.

So if you ask what Barbados was like for me, I will tell you about the rooftop, the breakfast Corey sent me to, the sea I watched from the boat, the Abbey train, the view from the cliff and the songs at night. I got history, food, scenery and fun, but I also got time to simply enjoy my own company. That is what I brought home.
